Two Popular Options, Very Different Realities

When homeowners in NWA are planning a patio, driveway, or walkway, pavers and stamped concrete both come up as options. Both look sharp. The price difference is real. And the long-term performance in NWA's climate tells the full story.

Stamped Concrete

Stamped concrete is poured as a continuous slab, then imprinted with patterns and colored before it sets. The result is a surface that mimics stone, brick, slate, or custom patterns — at a fraction of the cost of the real thing.

Advantages:

• Lower upfront cost than pavers
• No joints for weeds, insects, or shifting
• Wide variety of patterns and stain colors
• Easy to seal and maintain
• Holds up well under vehicle traffic

Considerations:

• Hairline cracks can develop over time (sealant helps prevent this)
• Repairs, if needed, are visible — it's hard to match a section perfectly
• Sloped applications need a broom finish or texture to maintain traction

Pavers

Pavers are individual units — concrete, brick, or stone — set on a compacted sand or gravel base. They're installed piece by piece and can be pulled up and reset if something shifts underneath.

Advantages:

• Individual units can be replaced if damaged
• Flexible — the surface moves with the ground rather than cracking
• Classic look, especially with natural stone

Considerations:

• Higher cost per square foot for materials and labor
• Joints require maintenance — weed growth and shifting over time
• In NWA's freeze-thaw cycles, the base needs to be properly compacted or settling becomes an issue
• Paver driveways under heavy vehicles can shift if the base wasn't built right

The NWA Freeze-Thaw Factor

Bella Vista and surrounding areas see enough freeze-thaw cycles to make both options a real-world test. Stamped concrete's biggest enemy in this climate is water getting into cracks and expanding. Sealing the surface every few years is the primary maintenance task.

Pavers handle freeze-thaw movement better in theory — individual units shift rather than crack. But if the base under a paver driveway isn't compacted correctly, you end up with uneven, rocking surfaces after a few winters.
