Block walls, stone walls, and engineered systems — what works on NWA hillsides and why. A practical guide for property owners.
Why Hillside Properties Need Retaining Walls
Bella Vista was built on terrain that doesn't naturally lend itself to flat, usable outdoor space. Most residential lots here have a significant grade — some with 1:1 slopes and rocky outcroppings. Left alone, those slopes erode, shift, and make the land impractical.
A retaining wall changes the equation. It holds soil back, creates level terraces, and stops erosion in its tracks. The right wall in the right location can transform a property that feels like it's fighting you into one that works for you.
Block Retaining Walls
Block walls are the most common solution we install, and for good reason. Modern retaining wall block — we primarily use Premier 8 from ABC Block — is engineered for this application. It's durable, handles NWA's freeze-thaw cycles well, and installs efficiently.
A typical residential retaining wall in our area runs about 2.5 feet tall. That's enough to create a meaningful terrace on most residential slopes. For taller walls, engineering review is required — and we handle that coordination through our partners at GTS and Crafton & Tull.
Block walls work best when:
- You need consistent appearance across a long run
- Budget efficiency matters
- You're building on a grade that allows for clean setback
Natural Stone Walls
Stone walls have a different aesthetic — more rugged, more natural, better suited to properties where you want the wall to blend into the landscape. They're more labor-intensive to build than block, which affects cost.
We use locally sourced stone where possible and backfill with appropriate material for drainage behind the wall.
Stone walls work best when:
- Aesthetic integration with the natural landscape matters
- The wall is a visible focal point
- You're doing a shorter run or accent wall
When Engineering Is Required
Taller walls and walls near property lines or load-bearing areas may require engineering review. We work directly with local engineering partners when needed and handle that coordination for you.
What to Think About Before You Call
A few questions worth having answers to before we come out for an estimate:
- Where is the water going? Every retaining wall needs drainage behind it or hydrostatic pressure will eventually push it over.
- Is the wall near a property line? Setback rules affect placement.
- What's the long-term use of the space? The answer changes how we design the terracing.
