7 Signs Your NWA Property Needs a Retaining Wall

Is Your Yard Trying to Tell You Something?

Northwest Arkansas is stunning — rolling hills, mature trees, and dramatic elevation changes that give every neighborhood its own character. But that same terrain creates real challenges for homeowners. Erosion, water damage, and soil movement are common, and many homeowners don't recognize them until the damage is already significant.

At GNG Underground, we've walked hundreds of properties across Bella Vista, Bentonville, Rogers, Fayetteville, and the surrounding communities. Here are the seven most common signs we see that tell a homeowner it's time to think seriously about a retaining wall.

1. Soil Is Washing Away from Slopes

After a heavy rain — and NWA gets plenty of them — take a look at your slopes. If you're seeing soil eroding away, ruts forming, or bare patches where grass can't hold on, the soil is moving. Left alone, this leads to deeper erosion that undermines foundations, driveways, and landscaping.

2. Cracking or Leaning Existing Walls

If you already have a retaining wall and it's cracking, bowing, or leaning forward, that's a structural warning. An existing wall that's failing needs to be addressed before it lets go — a collapsing wall can damage anything downhill from it, including vehicles, patios, and structures.

3. Water Pooling Near Your Foundation

When grading directs water toward the house instead of away from it, your foundation pays the price. In NWA, this is especially common on hillside lots where the natural slope channels runoff straight toward the structure. A properly built retaining wall with drainage behind it redirects that water where it belongs.

4. Muddy or Soft Spots After Rain

Persistent soft or muddy areas on flat parts of your yard — especially near the base of a slope — indicate that soil is saturating from above. This is a drainage problem that a retaining wall combined with a French drain or buried downspout system can solve together.

5. Your Driveway or Walkway Is Cracking or Settling

Cracks in concrete driveways or walkways that run alongside slopes are often caused by soil movement underneath. The soil shifts, the concrete loses support, and cracking follows. A retaining wall stabilizes the soil and stops the cycle.

6. You Can't Use Part of Your Yard

A lot of NWA homeowners have unusable portions of their property — slopes too steep to mow safely, areas that flood every time it rains, or hillside sections with no practical access. A retaining wall can terrace that space into a flat, usable area: a garden, a play area, a patio, or simply a lawn you can actually maintain.

7. Neighbor's Runoff Is Reaching Your Property

This is more common than people realize in dense NWA neighborhoods. If a neighboring property drains onto yours and you're absorbing that water, a retaining wall on your property line — combined with drainage — can stop the problem at the source.
