The Problem with Surface Downspouts
Every home in Bella Vista, Bentonville, Rogers, and Fayetteville has the same challenge: when it rains, the roof collects and concentrates a massive amount of water that has to go somewhere. Gutters do the collection work, and downspouts bring that water to the ground. The question is what happens next.
Most homes in NWA have downspouts that terminate at the foundation or a few feet away, depositing concentrated roof runoff right next to the structure. Splash blocks help a little. Downspout extensions help more. But neither solves the underlying problem: concentrated water near a foundation, year after year, causes damage.
What Happens When Downspouts Aren't Buried
**Foundation problems.** Repeated saturation of soil adjacent to a foundation causes erosion, settlement, and in serious cases, hydrostatic pressure that leads to cracks or water intrusion in crawl spaces and basements. This is especially common on clay-heavy NWA soils that hold water rather than letting it drain quickly.
**Landscape damage.** Downspout discharge erodes mulch, kills plants, creates ruts and channels in lawns, and deposits sediment in places you don't want it. If you've ever had a mulched bed that keeps washing out near a downspout, you know exactly what this looks like.
**Yard drainage problems.** Even without foundation damage, surface runoff from downspouts flows across the yard and collects in low spots. In many NWA backyards, this means soggy areas that never fully dry out after rain — preventing lawn establishment, creating mosquito habitat, and limiting how you use your yard.
How Buried Downspout Systems Work
Burying a downspout means connecting it to a section of underground pipe that carries roof runoff away from the structure and releases it at a safer distance — typically through a pop-up emitter in the yard, into a drainage swale, or into a dry creek bed.
The components are straightforward:
1. **Underground pipe** — usually 4-inch smooth-wall or corrugated PVC, buried at least 12 inches deep and sloped to drain (typically ⅛ inch drop per foot of run).
2. **Cleanout access** — a clean-out fitting near the downspout connection so debris can be cleared if needed.
3. **Pop-up emitter or outlet** — the termination point where water exits the buried pipe and returns to the surface, positioned in the yard away from the foundation and landscaping.
For properties with significant roof area or multiple downspouts, we tie multiple downspouts into a single underground system that exits at one or two controlled points.
