Swales are effective for properties with enough room to route water to a safe discharge point and where vegetation can be established to prevent erosion in the channel itself.

For natural-looking drainage on Ozark hillside properties, a dry creek bed — rocks arranged in a channel to carry runoff during rain events and look like a natural feature the rest of the time — is an effective and attractive solution. Dry creek beds slow water velocity, distribute it across a wider channel, and let it percolate rather than run off at full speed.
