Concrete Patios in NWA: More Options Than You Think

When most people think of a concrete patio, they picture a plain gray slab. And while a well-poured plain slab is genuinely a good product — durable, low maintenance, and practical — concrete patios today offer a lot more than that. NWA homeowners in Bella Vista, Bentonville, Rogers, and Fayetteville are choosing concrete for backyard patios precisely because of the variety of finish options and the long-term durability.

Here are some ideas and considerations that work particularly well for our corner of Northwest Arkansas.

Broom-Finish Concrete

The most common residential finish, and for good reason. After the concrete is poured and leveled, a broom is dragged across the surface while it's still workable, leaving a light texture. That texture improves traction — important in NWA where summer rain hits fast and hard — and it hides minor surface wear over time.

A standard broom-finish patio is the workhorse choice: economical, durable, and practical for a backyard that's going to see real use.

Exposed Aggregate

Exposed aggregate concrete is poured with decorative stone mixed in, then the surface paste is washed away before final cure to reveal the stone underneath. The result is a naturally textured, visually interesting surface with a look that complements NWA's Ozark aesthetic well — especially when local limestone aggregate is used.

Exposed aggregate costs a bit more than broom finish, but it ages beautifully and the texture is excellent for traction.

Colored Concrete

Integral color mixed into the concrete itself — or stain applied after — can shift the look of a patio significantly. Earth tones like buff, tan, and brown blend naturally into NWA landscapes. A colored slab doesn't just look intentional; it helps the patio read as part of the yard rather than dropped into it.

Stained concrete can also highlight aggregate in interesting ways and can be reapplied to refresh an older slab.

Concrete with Integrated Features

**Step-downs and elevation changes.** NWA backyards often have grade changes. A concrete patio can be designed with step-downs, raised sections, or ramps that make the transition feel intentional instead of awkward.

**Integrated planter curbs.** A low concrete curb poured as part of the patio creates a built-in planting bed without the cost of a separate landscape wall.

**Fire pit circle.** Pouring a dedicated circular pad adjacent to or inset within the patio creates a permanent fire pit area without loose materials or pavers that shift over time.

**Covered patio slabs.** If you're adding or already have a covered outdoor structure, concrete is the right floor material — it handles moisture, won't rot, and gives you a stable surface for outdoor furniture that will last as long as the structure itself.

Drainage Considerations for NWA Patios

NWA patios need to be sloped — typically ⅛ to ¼ inch per foot — to drain away from the house. On hillside lots in Bella Vista or with small backyards in Bentonville subdivisions, that direction of drainage needs to be planned carefully so you're not pushing water somewhere it causes a new problem.

For larger patio areas, we sometimes incorporate a channel drain at the low end that ties into a subsurface drainage system. This is worth the added cost on any patio larger than about 400 square feet.
